Sonic Adventure 2

  • SYSTEM: Dreamcast
  • MAKER: Sega
  • PRICE: $39.99

Sonic's last adventure for Dreamcast is an exciting one. Players control the good guys or the bad guys. (It's nice to see things from the villain's perspective for a change.) This Sonic is more linear than the last one, so there's not a lot of wandering around searching for the next level.

Grade: A

Twisted Metal: Black

  • SYSTEM: PlayStation 2
  • MAKER: Sony
  • PRICE: $49.99

The original vehicular combat game gets a PS2 makeover and comes off as one of the best games of its kind. The concept of destroying other vehicles stays the same, but the addition of some irresistibly dark levels and characters gives the experience a boost.

Grade: A-

Bomberman: Tournament

  • SYSTEM: Game Boy Advance
  • MAKER: Activision
  • PRICE: $39.99

Bomberman is a free-for-all in which players strategically place bombs around a maze to destroy their opponents. It's addicting, especially with multiple players, and there's an adventure mode to keep solo players interested.

Grade: A-

Escape from Monkey Island

  • SYSTEM: PlayStation 2
  • PRICE: $49.99
  • MAKER: LucasArts

If you're into high action, Monkey Island isn't for you. If you're into comedy, this lush text-based adventure will crack you up. The insult contests are the best part.

Grade: B+

Dark Cloud

  • SYSTEM: PlayStation 2
  • PRICE: $49.99
  • MAKER: Sony

Dark Cloud offers a SimCity-like experience, in that players rebuild a world wiped out by an evil genie. There are some original aspects of this game, but the uneventful dungeon levels are repetitive.

Grade: B-

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

  • SYSTEM: PlayStation
  • PRICE: $39.99
  • MAKER: Infogrames

Alone in the Dark bears a close resemblance to Resident Evil. Players creep around a house with a flashlight and guns, collecting keys to locked doors and waiting for monsters to jump out and give them a startle. The execution is pretty good, but the idea is old.

Grade: C+
