Camp survivorBy Compiled by ROGER MILLS and ERNEST HOOPER © St. Petersburg Times, published August 7, 2000 In the spirit of CBS' Survivor series, the Times is asking Bucs players and coaches whom they would throw off the island, er, out of camp, and why. Here is today's episode: C Todd Washington, a Virginia Tech alum, votes rookie LB and former University of Miami standout Nate Webster off the island. "I'm sick of those Miami Hurricanes. I don't want to be on an island with any Hurricane." Did you know?Linebacker Jeff Gooch played quarterback as a sophomore at Austin Peay. He was 33-for-71 for 431 yards and one touchdown and had 106 carries for 287 yards. Fresh facesHT./WT.: 6-2; 228 COLLEGE: Kentucky. POSITION: Tight end. NFL EXPERIENCE: Rookie. CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Whalen set an NCAA single-season record for catches by a tight end at Kentucky. He had 90 for 1,109 yards and 10 touchdowns. GLORY DAYS: As a starting receiver for La Salle High in Portland, Ore., he was part of a remarkable turnaround. The team that was 0-20 went 10-0 his senior year. He caught 68 passes for 1,502 yards and had 18 TDs. BRUSH WITH GREATNESS: A few months ago, Whalen met boxing great Muhammad Ali as the state of Kentucky and its senate recognized them. TO MAKE THE TEAM: As a fifth-round pick, Whalen likely has an inside track on one of the limited tight end spots. But he has been hampered by a hamstring injury and is playing catch-up. QUOTE: "I have to get healthy and stay healthy. My biggest thing is to stay consistent and when I come back, I can't afford to make mistakes because I've missed so much." Quotable"For the league, you hate to see those long-term injuries, and we've had more than our share of them through the early part of the preseason. Really, if (Moss) could just have a short-term injury the week before we play them, that would be ideal." -- Bucs coach Tony Dungy, on the injury to Vikings receiver Randy Moss during Saturday night's game against the Saints © St. Petersburg Times.
