SEMINOLE -- Voters who live in a neighborhood near the Pinellas Trail will have a chance today to join the city of Seminole.

If a majority approves a referendum, Seminole Grove Estates will be the latest neighborhood in unincorporated Pinellas County to be annexed into the city.

The subdivision of 222 homes is bordered by 97th Avenue N to the north, the Pinellas Trail to the east, 92nd Avenue N to the south and 121st Street to the west. Only voters who live within the boundaries can vote.

Yard signs for and against the annexation dot the middle-class neighborhood. "Hopefully, it will go through," said Don Muller. "The benefits are there."

Irene Geiger doesn't think so. "I've been here 21 years and everything has been just fine the way it is," she said.

If approved, the annexation would bring 476 registered voters and 81 acres, including the Seminole Youth Athletic Association complex on 90th Avenue N, into Seminole.

The estimated population of the area is 550 people. The annexation would take effect Aug. 17.

If the referendum fails, state law prohibits another annexation vote for at least two years.

The polling place is Seminole Community Library, 9199 113th St. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
