100-year birthdays

Zylpha Doris Doren was born Aug. 2, 1895, to Adrian Oliver Fusselman and Eleanor Eugenia Farnham in Edgerton, Ohio.

Doris, as she is known, moved to St. Petersburg in 1945 and met John Jesse Doren. They married Aug. 2, 1949. Mr. Doren died in 1960. They had no children.

Ms. Doren was a concert pianist for many years.

Jessie Veit, born Aug. 2, 1901, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Jessie was born in Rutherford, N.J., to Jessie Stewart Bennett and Otto Bennett, the youngest of four children.

Jessie and her family moved to Manchester, Vt., when she was 17. Mrs. Veit earned a teaching degree from Middlebury (Vt.) College. She married Alfred T. Veit in 1934, and they moved to the Panama Canal.

The Veits moved to St. Petersburg in the 1950s after retirement. Jessie is a member of Alpha Xi Delta, and is a lifetime member of Order of the Eastern Star and the PEO Sisterhood.

Elsie Kranendonk just celebrated her 101st birthday. She was born in Oostburg, Wisc., on Aug. 4, 1900, to Garrett and Angeline Hesselink Lemkuil.

She married Leonard Kranendonk, later a lead baritone with Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians, on Nov. 24, 1921.

The Kranendonks had two sons, Joe James and Robert Lee, and one daughter Barbara Ann. Robert lives in St. Petersburg. Barbara Ann Allen lives in Maine. Joe James was killed during World War II while he served as an Army lieutenant.

After living in New York City for more than 30 years, the Kranendonks moved to Pennsylvania. They moved to Melbourne, Fla., in 1980 and then to St. Petersburg in November 1998.

Elsie has six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
