Kenneth City to decide on annexation study tonight

KENNETH CITY -- The Kenneth City Town Council will decide tonight whether to hire the Pinellas Planning County to do a feasibility study of annexing the area bounded by the Lealman Fire District.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Kenneth City Community Hall, 4600 58th St. N. For information, call the Town Hall at 544-6655.

Doctor lectures tonight on attention deficit disorder

Ken Kroll, M.D. will speak on "New Hope for A.D.D. and Overactive Children" at 7 p.m. today in the Holiday Inn Express, 3990 Tampa Road, Oldsmar. A Harvard-educated and board-certified specialist, Dr. Kroll lectures internationally on the latest research in stress- related disorders. Swimmers win titles in national Senior Games

ST. PETERSBURG -- Four members of the St. Petersburg-based Florida Maverick Masters swimming team each won several events at the national Senior Games last month in Baton Rouge, La.

Swimming in the 75- to 79-year-old age group, Paul Hutinger won the 50-, 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, the 50 breaststroke and the 50 butterfly.

Florence Carr (75-79) won the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events and placed second in the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

Patricia Tullman (60-64) won the 100 and 200 backstroke and took second in the 50 and 200 freestyle, the 50 backstroke, and the 100 butterfly.

Patricia Hoffman (50-55) was fifth in the 50 butterfly and 200 individual medley; sixth in the 100 breaststroke; seventh in the 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke; and eighth in the 50 freestyle. Hoffman also placed second in the triathlon.

Event prepares students for return to school

ST. PETERSBURG -- Free school supplies, physicals, eye exams and immunizations are available Saturday at the Junior League's annual Back to School Care Fair at John Hopkins Middle School, 701 16th St. S.

The event, now in its fifth year, starts at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m.

As many as 3,000 youngsters are expected, said Care Fair chairwoman Karen Hajek.

"Basically, our goal is to create a fun environment for the children to receive everything they need to go back to school," Hajek said.

St. Anthony's Hospital and Bayfront Medical Center provide physicians and staff, and local Kiwanis clubs are providing another 100 volunteers.

Show at Pier to feature artists, entertainment

ST. PETERSBURG -- A glass and art show featuring several local artists is Saturday and Sunday at The Pier.

Pieces will be displayed in the rotunda from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Crystal Mirage Gallery is presenting the free show. Entertainment is scheduled from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Cafe Lido will serve complimentary refreshments.

The artists will include Alan Promades, Jeffrey and Joan Patterson, Chuck and Harry Boux and Adrian Raynor.

Seminole library to host puppet show Saturday

SEMINOLE -- Puppeteer Gordon Bennett will present King Neptune's Court, a marionette puppet show, at 11 a.m. Saturday at Seminole Community Library, 9199 113th St. N. Admission is free. The show is sponsored by the Friends of the Seminole Library. Call 397-2112.

Waters to host elder symposium

St. Petersburg College's Health Education Center, 7200 66th St. N, Pinellas Park, will be the site of a elder symposium from 8:30 a.m. until noon Thursday. A panel discussion will tackle such topics as health care, prescription drugs, Medicare/Medicaid, elder abuse and other issues. There is no charge. Call 545-6421.

Pinellas Animal Services offers doggone good deal

If you're ready for both the responsibility and joys of having a dog, the Pinellas County Animal Services has a great deal for you. During August, dogs can be adopted for only $15. That fee includes spaying or neutering, the first set of vaccines, license and tag.

Visit the center at 12450 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays. You can also preview some of the animals by looking at the Animal Services website, www.pinellascounty.org.

International adoption seminar to be held

Interested in adopting a child from another country? Festival of Reading needs vendors

The 2001 Times Festival of Reading seeks food and book vendors and entertainers for the event scheduled at Eckerd College for Nov. 10-11. Children's entertainers are encouraged to apply, as well as dancers, poets, musicians, puppeteers, storytellers and actors. All performers will receive a stipend. The application deadline is Aug. 31. Walk to benefit polycystic kidney disease research

The Suncoast Friends Chapter of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation will sponsor a "Walk for PKD" at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Proceeds will benefit PKD research programs. Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic, life-threatening disease that affects more than 600,000 Americans and an estimated 12.5-million people worldwide. Asian center offers GED, English classes

The Asian Family and Community Empowerment Center offers classes for general equivalency diploma preparation at 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, English for speakers of other languages at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and citizenship preparation at 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the center, 2201 First Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Vendors needed for church craft show

St. Paul United Methodist Church seeks artists and craftspersons to display their wares at the church's sixth annual craft show, "Homespun by Hands and Hearts," to be held Oct. 20 at the church's Christian Life Enrichment Center, 1199 Highland Ave., Largo. Have fun while learning how to save your pet

The Pinellas Animal Foundation and Pinellas County Animal Services will co-host "Dog Days of August" on Aug. 25 at Dunedin Stadium at Grant Field, 373 Douglas Ave. The Dunedin Blue Jays will take on the Charlotte Rangers at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. PAF will offer pet CPR and police-dog demonstrations; an "ask a vet" session; and information on hurricane preparedness for pets, pet products and pet adoptions, invisible fences, identification microchips for pets and more.

Victory over Violence celebration is free
