Once again, sentimental old songs like Perfidia, Que Divino, Frenesi and, of course, Guantanamera will be heard this weekend in Ybor City. It's the 12th annual edition of Asi Cantaba Cuba (That's How Cuba Sang), a revue of pre-Castro Cuban music put on by Spanish Lyric Theatre in the performance hall of Hillsborough Community College at Palm Avenue and 14th Street in Tampa.
"It's a great opportunity to hear this music live. It puts some Latin music back in the Latin Quarter," said Rene Gonzales, SLT artistic director, who provides narration in Spanish and English.
Singers Roberto Ferrer, pictured here, Jorge Acosta and Mary Gonzalez will do the honors with a band led by Steve McColley.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 and on sale at two Tampa businesses: Eddy's Jewelers, 336 W Columbus Drive, (813) 876-3119; or La Oriental Bakery, 3317 W Columbus Drive, (813) 873-0844. For information, call (813) 936-0217.
Chopin champion
It goes without saying that pianist Ning An will play some Chopin at the Museum of Fine Arts. An, born in 1976 in China, was the 2000 winner of the American National Chopin Competition in Miami. Along with Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, his program includes Beethoven's Eroica Variations, Rachmaninoff's Op. 32 preludes and Liszt's Dante Sonata.
An, whose pianist father is director of music at the School of Ballet at Indiana University, is scheduled to tour next year with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1. He is studying for a master's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music under Russell Sherman.
His recital is at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: $7 and $15. (727) 896-2667.
