The pitchers

Paul Wilson

Since returning to the rotation after Bryan Rekar went on the disabled list July 20, Wilson is 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA. He got a no-decision despite pitching 51/3 scoreless innings against Chicago on Sunday.

Joe Mays

Mays (12-9, 3.23) has lost two straight and four of his past five starts. The right-hander has allowed seven runs and 19 hits over 142/3 innings against Toronto on July 31 and Kansas City on Aug. 5.

YOU DON'T SAY

The temperature on the field at the start of the Padres-Phillies game on Thursday at Veterans Stadium was a sultry 148.7 degrees. While Rays players rarely deal with such extreme heat, Greg Vaughn knows what it's like. The Rays outfielder spent a summer playing at Cinergy Field while with the Reds in 1999.

"It's real hot," he said. "It's nothing you could imagine. Nothin'. It's like turning the oven on broil and then sticking your head in it."
