ST. PETERSBURG -- The personal problems that led to Darren Daulton's resignation as Rays bullpen coach could be finance related.
Daulton, 39, recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings and, according to court documents, the list of creditors includes the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Marion County tax collector's office, several banks and the Ford Motor Credit Co.
Daulton was scheduled to testify at a hearing Friday in Tampa, but his lawyer said he went out of town to attend to his mother, who recently had a heart attack. The hearing was rescheduled for Aug. 24.
Under Chapter 11, individuals are not necessarily bankrupt. The chapter frees them from the threat of creditors' lawsuits until they can develop a plan to put their finances in order.
Daulton retired in 1997 after a stellar 14-year playing career spent mostly with the Phillies and took his first coaching job with the Rays this season. His exact salary was not known, but coaches of Daulton's experience level make about $100,000 a year.
