McDyess added to U.S. basketball teamBy Compiled from Times wires © St. Petersburg Times, published August 12, 2000 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- USA Basketball announced Friday that Nuggets forward Antonio McDyess will replaced Tim Duncan on the Olympic team. Duncan is recovering from knee surgery that kept him out of last season's playoffs. "This is a dream come true," McDyess said. "I cannot wait to represent my country in Sydney." McDyess, 25, becomes the third injury replacement, following Toronto's Vince Carter, who took Tom Gugliotta's spot, and Vancouver's Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who replaced Grant Hill. The U.S. team begins training Aug. 25 in Hawaii, and the Olympics begin Sept. 15. The gold medal game is Oct. 1, a few days before most NBA teams open training camp. CYCLING: Former speedskater Chris Witty will have to beat a challenger to keep her spot on the U.S. Olympic team for the Sydney Games, her agent said. Bill Stapleton said Tammy Thomas, who was left off the three-member women's team, is scheduled to race Witty between Aug. 18-20. Sean Petty, the team's director of athlete performance, said the showdown will take place at a sea-level track, probably in Blaine, Minn., or Frisco, Texas. He said officials will decide on the venue Monday. "It will be one ride each, just like it will be in Sydney," Petty said. TENNIS: Top player Jelena Dokic was included on Australia's team after officials agreed in principle to let her live outside the Olympic Village during the Games. Dokic had stalled on whether to play because she wanted to stay at her Sydney home during the tournament. Australian Olympic Committee spokeswoman Julie Symonds said Dokic, 17, would have to sign an agreement to take responsibility for her safety. OPENING CEREMONY: Sydney officials have changed their minds and won't sell tickets to either dress rehearsal for the Sept. 15 event. Organizers announced last year they would sell tickets to the second dress rehearsal, Sept. 13, to try to raise $5.8-million to defray the cost of the Opening Ceremony. But those plans were scrapped because of additional costs involved in selling tickets. © St. Petersburg Times. All rights reserved. |
