Don't pull starter in command

© St. Petersburg Times,
published August 12, 2001

Where in the world does it say that a pitcher who is in absolute control of the game should be limited to 80 pitches? Jason Standridge was remarkable against the world champions. Manager Hal McRae's statement, "We have to learn to win," is in error. McRae has to learn to win. There was no losing pitcher for the Rays; there was a losing manager, Hal McRae.
-- Bob McIntyre, e-mail

Yan not the answer

So when is Hal McRae going to admit Esteban Yan isn't the closer, and never will be? He is the weakest link in the bullpen. Tell him goodbye! And when is he going to see there are two heads-up performers on the bench in Damian Rolls and Russ Johnson? Why is Aubrey Huff still in the lineup kicking balls around and making too many mental errors?
-- AJ Black, Dunedin

Rays more than Mets?

While vacationing in New York in July, I attended a Mets game at Shea Stadium. We parked in the stadium parking for $8. While inside watching the game, I bought a 16-ounce beer in a plastic bottle, sold by a roaming vendor, for $5.75.

In June, I attended a Rays game and parked in the stadium parking area for $10. While inside the stadium, I bought a beer in a cup for $6, and I doubt it was 16 ounces. Can the Rays please explain the higher cost to attend their games when their payroll is one of the lowest?
-- Dick Zutell, Hudson

Just do your job

Can't understand why Tampa Bay fans cheered when Derrick Brooks reported to camp. He signed a contract to play football for a certain period of time at a certain price and now he wants a new contract. No contract should be renegotiated until the current one ends. What would happen in the real world if you went to your boss and demanded a new contract after you had agreed and put your reputation on the line?
-- Andy Marshall, e-mail

Berman not the best

I disagree with the recent choice of Chris Berman as a top announcer (TV/Radio survey results, Aug. 4). I watch a lot of baseball on television, but I will never watch a game that he calls. His announcing sounds like he just got out of school and is learning how to do the job.

The ridiculous nicknames he makes up for players are idiotic, uncalled for and destroy the continuity of the announcing of the game. I cringe if it's an important game and he starts that.

All I can say to those who think Berman is a top announcer is their standards are frightfully low.
-- Barry Sleesman, Spring Hill

Fan of the "Wall'

My hat's off to Rick Stroud for such a super article, Wall of Fame Aug. 5. Nobody can stop us now.
-- Alan Roman, Clearwater

Cheers for Shelton

Pick a plot, any plot -- just end it Aug. 7 by Gary Shelton should run away with top honors in the state and national competition.

It's a classic.
-- Bob Austin, e-mail

WFLA needs lesson in race coverage

Why is it that when we are just about to hear an interview with a driver regarding a crash, we are interrupted by a weather bulletin regarding a storm that not only is hundreds of miles away, but is not even headed in our direction?

WFLA-Ch. 8 needs to learn a thing or two about Winston Cup broadcasting.
-- Don Mott, Largo
