Truck driver faces hearing over bashed roadway, earlier mishapBy Times staff writer
© St. Petersburg Times, TAMPA -- The driver of a city garbage truck that struck the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway on Monday will face a disciplinary hearing for that accident and for a similar accident last week, city officials said. Wayne Jackson, 32, said he did not know the lift on his truck was fully extended until moments before he tried to drive under the expressway about 9:19 a.m. at 34 Street and Adamo Drive. The resulting accident caused part of a beam to fall and closed one eastbound lane of the Crosstown for several weeks. Jackson, who received minor injuries in the accident, was released Tuesday from Tampa General Hospital. Records detailing an Aug. 7 accident show a tailgate on Jackson's truck struck a power line, which pulled down an electric pole and a transformer. "We'll combine the two at a disciplinary hearing, which is postponed until Wayne gets back to work in about two weeks," McBride said. That accident caused an estimated $15,000 in damage. Expressway officials have not yet estimated a cost for the Crosstown repairs, which could take 10 days. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
