Belleair Beach honors double dose of heroism

BELLEAIR BEACH -- On a normal day, Frank Stringfellow is busy at his public works job.

The City Council last week recognized Stringfellow's efforts on two far-from-normal days in May: He rescued a resident who had fallen into the Intracoastal Waterway and, in a separate incident, prevented a grass fire from damaging a home.

Stringfellow was working at the City Marina May 10 when Lydia New lost her balance, struck her head on the dock and fell into the water. "Frank's quick actions possibly helped save Mrs. New from drowning," the police report said.

Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni will hold a town meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 at Town Hall, 17425 Gulf Blvd.

Morroni has held town meetings as an additional way to meet citizens and discuss issues important to them. Morroni will hold similar town meetings at various locations throughout his district.

Signs saying "Make This A Litter Free Event" soon will appear at public events around the city.

Ten signs, donated by the Keep Pinellas Beautiful organization and financed through a SWIFTMUD grant, were accepted by the city last week.

"These signs have worked very well for us. People see them and pick up their litter instead of throwing it anywhere," organization representative Carol Malcolm told the commission.

Despite one member's plea, the commission rejected townwide garage sales.

"Let's try it at least one time. If it works, great. If it doesn't, at least we will have tried it," urged Commissioner Gary Curtis.

Curtis cited successful garage sales in Redington Beach and Redington Shores, where he said officials are considering holding them twice a year.

"We're not the other towns," said Ray Jay Jagielski. "I feel very strongly about strange people coming into town."

Unmoved by Curtis' arguments, other commissioners pointed out that individual homeowners are permitted two private garage sales a year.
