Student loses control of car, smashes wall

TAMPA -- A 16-year-old Sickles High School student drove a speeding car over a tree and through a concrete wall at the school Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured.

The student, who was not identified by school officials, apparently lost control of a late-model Infiniti in the school parking lot, ran over a curb, snapped a small tree in half and punched through a concrete wall shielding trash bins.

The incident occurred about 12:15 p.m.

"He was driving and just lost control," said Hillsborough sheriff's Deputy Steve Lewis.

Wife is charged in spouse's shooting

TAMPA -- A 51-year-old woman who deputies said shot her husband Friday night has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Isabelle Liz Kyle was arrested Tuesday at her residence at 2207 E Lumsden Road in Valrico. Hillsborough deputies said she shot Christopher Kyle five times.

Kyle required surgery at Tampa General Hospital, deputies said. The hospital would not release information about his condition.

Man's body found in Cockroach Bay

RUSKIN -- The body of a Hispanic male was found floating Tuesday in Cockroach Bay at Neptune Drive, authorities said. The man appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s and was discovered at 7:45 p.m., Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said.

Authorities said they do not suspect foul play. An autopsy will be performed, they said.

Parents want judge removed in Schiavo case

ST. PETERSBURG -- The parents of a woman in a vegetative state accused a judge of bias Tuesday and asked him to step down from the case in which their daughter's life is at stake.

Bob and Mary Schindler asked Probate Judge George Greer to disqualify himself in the Terri Schiavo case.

They cited his refusal to even consider the possibility raised by other doctors that she is not in a vegetative state and hold a hearing to resolve the conflict.

Greer has twice ruled that Terri's husband and guardian, Michael Schiavo, can remove his wife's feeding tube and let her die. Greer's most recent ruling on Aug. 7 said there was no new evidence presented that she wasn't brain dead.

In that ruling, Greer gave Michael Schiavo permission to withdraw the feeding tube on Aug. 28. Terri Schiavo would then starve to death within two weeks.

In an accompanying petition Tuesday, the parents seek a stay, saying Greer's action raises the "gravest of due process concerns."
