Protecting yourself from the sun is important when fishing Florida waters. You can get more than a sunburn; long-term sun exposure can be detrimental to your health.

A few things that aid in sun protection also offer advantages in catching fish. A long-billed hat shades your face and helps you see in the water more clearly. Quality polarized sunglasses reduce glare, allowing your vision to penetrate the water's surface. The glasses also provide ultraviolet light protection.

Don't leave sunblock or suntan lotion on your hands. Fish can see and smell it. If lotion gets on bait, tackle or other equipment, the fish will shy away. Apply sunblock before leaving the house, then wash your hands thoroughly. Carry soap on the boat for a touchup.

T-tops and Bimini tops offer shade, but they create obstacles to getting around while fighting fish. It's a tradeoff that may save your skin in the long run. A long-sleeve T-shirt offers protection and feels cooler.
