Ace's health leaves Boston with worries

BOSTON -- The Red Sox are in a playoff race as tight as Pedro Martinez's shoulder. At a time his team can't afford to lose him, Martinez says he doesn't expect to miss a start.

"I don't see why not," he said Tuesday when asked if he could take his regular turn in the rotation Saturday against Texas.

Martinez pulled himself out of Monday night's 7-3 win over the Devil Rays in the fourth inning because of a stiff shoulder. It was his shortest start of the season. His condition was uncertain after the game, and he wasn't available for comment.

The American League strikeout leader didn't have the usual pop on his fastball. Baseball's ERA leader even gave up a three-run homer to Miguel Cairo, who hadn't homered all season.

BLUE JAYS: Right-hander Frank Castillo was put on the 15-day disabled list because of sprained right forearm muscles and a sprained ligament in his right elbow.

BRAVES: Atlanta activated outfielder Reggie Sanders from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder George Lombard to Triple-A Richmond.

DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona recently borrowed $20-million to meet operating expenses, a loan that had to be co-signed by Major League Baseball, the Arizona Republic reported. The club has faced a cash shortage in each of its three years.

DODGERS: Kevin Brown says he's fine. His latest performance, teammate Gary Sheffield and the Florida Marlins say otherwise. Pitching with an injury in his right side, the Los Angeles ace lasted 11/3 innings and gave up nine runs, five earned, in an 11-2 loss Monday to the Marlins, his former team. The outing was his shortest in five years. "I think he's ailing a little bit," Sheffield said. "He's not exploding off the mound like he's used to."

EXPOS: Pitcher Hideki Irabu had a bone spur removed from his right elbow during season-ending surgery performed by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

PHILLIES: Philadelphia activated right-hander Jason Boyd from the disabled list and designated left-hander Mark Holzemer for assignment. Boyd, 27, has been out since June 15 with a broken right hand sustained when he slammed his glove into the Phillies bench.

RANGERS: Pitcher Ryan Glynn was placed on the 15-day disabled list as tests continue to be conducted to determine why he fainted in the dugout. Medical exams haven't determined why Glynn passed out after being taken out in the fifth inning of Friday night's game against Boston.

ROCKIES: Colorado activated right-hander Mike DeJean from the 15-day disabled list and designated left-hander Scott Karl for assignment. DeJean, out since July 25 with a strained left rib cage, is 4-1 with a 3.89 ERA in 33 relief appearances.

CHARBONEAU RETURNS: Joe Charboneau, winner of the 1980 AL Rookie of the Year award with Cleveland, will appear in his fourth decade of professional baseball this month. Charboneau, 45, will have one at-bat for the Canton Crocodiles of the independent Frontier League on Aug. 27 tagainst the London Werewolves. Charboneau is in his second season as the Crocodiles' hitting coach. Although the Frontier League has an age limit of 27, commissioner Bill Lee said it gave Charboneau a special dispensation.
