The Pinellas-based Tampa Bay Renegades recently finished fifth at the 14-and-under AAU national championships in Sarasota.

The Renegades went 8-2 in the 68-team tournament. Clayton Pisani hit .457 and led the team with 14 runs scored. Louis Oliveri hit .500 with 18 hits. Kyle Leith, Burke Hedges and Johnny Zeliff each won two games on the mound.

Handball

Anver Suleiman of St. Pete Beach recently won the 70-and-over national one-wall handball title in Coney Island, N.Y. Suleiman, who has won national championships in the 50-and-over and 60-and-over age group, defeated Sonny Schaffer of New York 21-11, 21-7 in the final.

Suleiman trains at St. Petersburg's downtown YMCA.

He said he almost didn't finish the final due to an injury.

"I was hurting badly," Suleiman said. "I had a bad back, and I didn't know if I could make it. But I had a group from Florida cheering me on, so I played through it. I'm paying for it now."
