Nicolas Cage, left, and Penelope Cruz lack the chemistry as a couple to make the romantic Captain Corellis Mandolin fly.

What this summer movie season needs is a good tearjerker.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin may be just the ticket. Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage plays Capt. Antonio Corelli, commander of Italian forces in Greece during World War II. You may guess he also plays the mandolin, a sweet-sounding instrument that tempts a married woman (Penelope Cruz) whose fisherman husband (Christian Bale) is away fighting in the Greek army. Director John Madden (Shakespeare in Love, Mrs. Brown) is adept at period romance, and Shawn Slovo's screenplay is based on the best-selling novel by Louis de Bernieres. Captain Corelli's Mandolin was screened too late for Weekend review. See Friday's Page 2B for a complete review.
