The Grand Slam Slammers, a Pinellas County-based team, recently finished 14th in the 68-team AAU 14-under national tournament in Sarasota.

The Slammers went 6-1 over two rounds of pool play to advance to the final 16. But they were upended in elimination play by the Norwalk (Calif.) Sting Rays, 3-2. Both of the Slammers tournament losses came by one run.

In the final game, the Slammers fell behind 3-2 in the first inning, and neither team scored the rest of the way. Ricky Rodgers pitched six innings of scoreless relief for the Slammers.

Cory Birge and Bobby Uzdavines were the Slammers' top hitters, each batting .400 for the tournament, and Rodgers yielded just one run in 14 innings.
