THE PITCHERS

Tanyon Sturtze

Sturtze (7-9, 4.88) faced the Twins on Sunday and pitched 62/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with five strikeouts and two walks. The Rays are 6-2 in his past eight starts.

Rick Reed

Reed (9-7, 3.65) is 1-1 since he was traded from the Mets on July 30. The veteran right-hander pitched six innings against the Rays on Sunday, allowing three runs and one home run.

GET A GRIP

Rays third baseman Jared Sandberg was so proud of the new bats he received Tuesday at Yankee Stadium that he invited several teammates to take a few practice swings with one. But when the Rays left town Thursday, the rookie's inventory had shrunk by one.

Not because he broke one. Not because somebody pilfered one. No, Sandberg's bat slipped out of his hands during the fourth inning on Thursday and flew four rows into the stands, where a Yankees fan retrieved it.
