Bluewater fishing has been the buzz on the beach. Capt. "Big John" Skinner boated two nice marlin and had half a dozen more hookups fishing 125 miles southwest of John's Pass in an area known as the Steps.
The Steps is a deep drop-off on the continental shelf that goes from 600 feet to 1,800 fathoms in a couple of miles. Traditionally the Steps have produced some of the gulf's biggest fish.
The blues Skinner caught weighed about 700 pounds. They aggressively hit jetheads and doorknobs trolled at about 8 knots.
In addition to marlin, numerous wahoo, blackfin tuna and yellowfin tuna were caught near the Steps. The biggest yellowfin weighed more than 150 pounds. The yellowfin were located on the east side of the loop current and were feeding on Jack Mack's and bonito. The plentiful wahoo were in the 30- to 40-pound range.
Dolphin have been located 60-80 miles offshore around weed lines. These weed lines should remain until our next major storm.
