Registry holds solution to misspelled name

Q: When the operating system on my Windows 98 computer was loaded, the technician misspelled my name. Is there some way I can correct this? A friend suggested looking in the registry, but I cannot find my way through it.

A: There are two ways to accomplish this, and each involves modifying the registry. Of course there are risks involved when modifying the registry. However, Windows 98 makes a backup copy each time you boot. If something did go wrong, you would need to boot to DOS, run SCANREG and select a previous copy. With that said, let's move on. If you're comfortable modifying the registry directly, click Start, then Run, type RegEdit and then press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. In the right pane, you'll see the key RegisteredOwner=your misspelled name. Click this key to select it and press Enter. When the dialog box opens, type in the correct name and press Enter. Close RegEdit (choose Registry, Exit) and restart the computer.

If you would rather not modify the registry directly, try this method:

1. Using Notepad, create a new file.

2. Type in the following four lines (note the second line is a blank line that needs to be there):

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]

RegisteredOwner=Your Correct Name

3. Substitute your correctly spelled name in line 4 in place of Your Correct Name as shown. Save the file under any name with a type .reg, such as Name.reg, and exit Notepad.

4. Double-click on this newly created file and it will automatically update your registry.

There will be confirmation messages asking if you really want to do this, and then a message of success when it's done. Next, reboot.

Scanner software problem

Q. I get this message at startup: "Windows is missing or unable to load VMM32.VXD. Please hit any key to continue." Then the computer shuts down. Once I restart, Windows loads normally or in safe mode.

A. This problem can occur if the Umaxis11.386 file is being loaded in the System.ini file. This file is used by a UMAX scanner. If this applies to you, go to www.umax.com/scanners/standard/support/download.cfm. Click on the listing for "Cannot find or load vmm32.vxd scanner error" under the Special Notes section and follow the instructions there based upon your UMAX scanner model. The error message also may be caused by a file installed in the System.ini file by the Genius scanner software. The Genius scanner file is named Smis11.386. Contact Genius to inquire about the availability of a fix at www.genius-kye.com.

Missing Windows NT file

Q. After a recovery from a crash of our Microsoft NT Workstation 4.0 system, this error message appears when we access Internet Explorer 5.0: "CAPI -- The install program could not open signature file." We are unable to access online accounts that we had set up and that require passwords.

A. This is a known problem that can occur if the Winhlp32.exe file is not present in the%SystemRoot%\System32 folder in Windows NT. According to Microsoft, the following procedure should solve the problem:

1. Copy the Winhlp32.exe file from the %SystemRoot% folder to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder, or expand the Winhlp32.exe file from the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM to the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder.

2. Install Internet Explorer again. (To save time, you can choose the option to upgrade only newer items when you are prompted.) Also, the %SystemRoot% folder is usually the WINNT folder unless you have specifically installed into a different folder.
