TAMPA -- Monday afternoon at Carrollwood Country Club, Jesuit beat defending Sunshine Athletic Conference champion Zephyrhills 166-173 in an early-season matchup of two of Tampa Bay's top prep teams.
Jesuit was led by Jeff Del Rio (40), Lewis McIntosh, Chris Fowler and Jason Barsema (42). And those weren't even the Tigers' big dogs, who see their first action at 3 p.m. Thursday at Pebble Creek against powerhouse Wharton.
For the Bulldogs, only Mark Dunn brought his "A" game, shooting a match-low 37 despite running into serious trouble on the ninth hole. But he rescued himself expertly, Jesuit coach Joe Kijanski said.
"He was even par coming into the ninth and he shanked it out of bounds," Kijanski said. "But he came back and sunk a chip off the green for a bogey. That's great golf for a 37. The kid's solid."
Following Dunn were Aaron Young (43), Kyle Pierson (45) and A.J. Blackstone (48.)
