Cross country

Veteran long-distance runner Ray Wunderlich III of St. Petersburg has been named cross country coach at Eckerd College. He takes over a women's team that returns seven of its top eight runners from last season, when the Tritons finished third in the Sunshine State Conference.

Eckerd doesn't have a men's cross country team.

Wunderlich, a 2:25 marathoner, was a member of Lakewood's state title cross country team in 1978. He went on to the University of Florida, where he lettered in cross country and ran track. He later earned a master's degree in sports administration from Florida State.

He has served as a volunteer coach at Lakewood and Northeast highs.

A three-time winner of Dunedin's Midnight Run 10K, he is currently rehabilitating from Achilles' tendon surgery, which was performed last week.

Baseball

The St. Petersburg Renegades AAU 12-and-under team recently finished 10th in a national tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

After losing their first two games, the Renegades won six in a row, defeating teams from Puerto Rico, North Carolina, Florida and South Carolina. The Renegades lost their final game to South Carolina 7-5.

Vince Grass led the Renegades in hitting and pitched one win. Josh Chamberlain also hit and pitched well.
