BEARS: Defensive lineman Chris Mims, 29, who signed as a free agent in February, was waived. A first-round pick of the Chargers in 1992, the 6-foot-5, 305-pound Mims has 226 tackles, 42 sacks and eight fumble recoveries in eight seasons with the Chargers and Redskins.

CARDINALS: Quarterback Jake Plummer rested his sore right shoulder for the second day in a row, saying it was just a precaution to make sure he's ready for the Sept. 3 season opener against the Giants. "I could have thrown today, but what am I getting ready for -- to go play San Diego? If I don't even play against San Diego, who cares?" he said, referring to the final preseason game Friday night. "We're getting ready for the Giants. I have to practice next week no matter what, and I don't want to have a sore arm." Plummer, hurt by an assortment of injuries last season, said he noticed the soreness against the Vikings on Friday.

COWBOYS: Cornerback Kevin Smith was placed on the reserved-retired list and could become an assistant coach. Smith left training camp a few weeks ago to decide whether to call it a career after nine seasons.

EAGLES: Defensive end Greg Jefferson had surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, which he injured in practice. Jefferson has started 41 games at defensive end over three years. A third-round draft pick in 1995, he has 192 tackles, including 131/2 sacks in 57 career games.

GIANTS: Second-year halfback Sean Bennett will have season-ending surgery on his right knee. Bennett, who injured the same knee last year, was hurt in the preseason opener against the Bears.

LIONS: Running back Ken Oxendine was claimed off waivers from the Falcons. Oxendine, 24, rushed for 452 yards and one touchdown in 12 games, including nine starts, last season. He was Atlanta's leading rusher in 1999 and had 17 receptions for 172 yards and a score.

PACKERS: Guard Raleigh McKenzie was among three veterans cut, including linebacker Anthony Harris and punter Tom Hutton. First-year wide receiver Kenny Coutain from Memphis and kicker Jeff Hall from Tennessee were waived. With the moves, Green Bay appears to have settled on punter Josh Bidwell, who missed what would have been his first season last year while battling testicular cancer. After two surgeries and two cycles of intensive chemotherapy, Bidwell beat the cancer and slowly began his recovery. He started punting in January.
