BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech flanker Andrae Harrison, a high school teammate of star quarterback Michael Vick who was expected to become part of the 11th-ranked Hokies' passing game this season, has decided to transfer.

"It's really a shame. He's really done well academically," coach Frank Beamer said Tuesday. "It's just he decided that this program wasn't the program for him."

Beamer said he learned of Harrison's decision Monday.

"We wish him the very best. We hope it will work out good for him," he said.

It was unclear to which school Harrison planned to transfer.

Harrison could not be reached for comment.

"I'm really disappointed Andrae has decided to leave," Vick said. "We've known each other for a long time, and we've been friends since high school. I'm a little hurt he didn't come and talk to me. I wish he would've told me what was going on before he made his decision."

Harrison, a 6-foot-3, 209-pound redshirt freshman from Warwick High in Newport News, Va., was third on Virginia Tech's depth chart and expected to play this year.

OREGON: Offensive lineman Al Cotton, who missed four games last season with head injuries, quit after sustaining a mild concussion in practice last week. Cotton, expected to start at right tackle, was injured a week ago in a non-contact drill, and team doctors and coaches advised him to stop playing. "We knew it was a concern last year, and I guess we hoped against hope that it would resolve itself," coach Mike Bellotti said Monday. "He had a minor concussion -- very minor -- last week, but they concluded that it was problematic." Cotton, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound junior from Tacoma, Wash., missed the first two games of the 1999 season with a leg injury. He sustained a concussion against Southern California in his second game back, and another one came a week later at Washington.

TEXAS A&M: Wide receiver Jamaar Taylor has transferred from Notre Dame after missing his first season with the Fighting Irish because of an injury. Coach R.C. Slocum said Taylor was admitted into A&M and could work out with the team today. NCAA transfer rules require Taylor to sit out this season. He will have three years of eligibility left starting in 2001.
