AUGUST NIGHTS: Three Crystal River High School alumni -- Brendalee (Beardsley) Combrink of Nature Coast Trading Co., Beth (Carter) Yant and Jerry Yant of Nature Coast Electric -- organized an event that provides an opportunity for the 249 Crystal River High School seniors to compete in a scholarship program. The fundraising event is called Hot August Nights 2001 and will be from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Nature Coast Trading Co. in the Crystal Square Shopping Center on U.S. 19.

There will be more than a $1,000 in cash prizes and give-a-ways awarded, live entertainment, including music by the Sevilles and One Flight Up, great food vendors -- everything from London broil to hot dogs -- an antique auction and a boat show provided by Nature Coast Marine. Harley Davidson of Crystal River will be sponsoring the event along with Time Warner, St. Petersburg Times and WRGO 102.7-FM plus dozens of local and national companies.

PRECIOUS CARGO SCHOOL FREE/REDUCED PRICE MEALS: Precious Cargo Preschool announces its participation in the U. S. Department of Agriculture's child care food program. TEACHER APPRECIATION AT MOSI: The Museum Of Science and Industry invites teachers, educators and their families to a Teacher Appreciation Event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 9. The event is free for educators with a $2 charge per family member per film in the IMAX Dome Theatre.

MOSI educators will show teachers how to integrate MOSI programs into the curriculum, providing step-by-step instructions on selecting and scheduling the programs that best fit their educational needs.

Films that will be showing that day include Journey into Amazing Caves, Amazing Journeys and Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure. Everyone will get a sneak peek at clips from Disney's Beauty and the Beast film on the giant screen and a short presentation on the accompanying education materials.

Youth Media International, in cooperation with Walt Disney Pictures, provides the curriculum resource guide that puts emphasis on science and technology but also includes activities in history, social studies, anthropology, environmental studies, language arts, biology and math.

During the event, educators may preview educational programs in the Coleman Science Works Theater, Verizon Challenger Learning Center, the Saunders Planetarium and the Duckwall Foundation LabZone. Interactive demonstrations will take place in all of the exhibit galleries.

Guests are eligible for prize drawings and give-aways, and there will be food specials in the MOSI Cafe and discounts in the Science Store. There will also be an Usborne Book Fair from 1 to 6 p.m. where teachers can receive half price on all Hotshot Books, and buy five books and get one free.
