Waste collector requests rate increases in its zones

BROOKSVILLE -- Waste Management Inc., trash collector for High Point, Brookridge, Hernando Beach, Pine Island and Spring Hill south of Cortez Boulevard, could win rate increases in all of its zones.

County commissioners on Tuesday will consider raising the monthly collection rate in Districts C and D by 61 cents, and in District F by 19 cents. Waste Management officials had asked for a hike of $1.11 a month.

Chuck Lewis, county franchise manager, said the proposed increase is justified based on rising costs for fuel and transportation to the landfill, instead of the Pasco County incinerator. The increase for District F is based on gas costs and a consumer price index increase, but not transportation because its trash never was taken to the Pasco incinerator.

Rates for Districts A and B are set to remain the same, Lewis said, because the companies serving those areas did not request more money.
