Clerks (1994) -- On a shockingly paltry budget of $27,000, writer-director Kevin Smith made an amusing comedy about the daily trials of two twentysomething clerks working in a rundown strip mall and the eccentrics who pop in for business in one juicily profane day, including Jay and Silent Bob.
Mallrats (1995) -- Smith revisits the world of slackdom, focusing on one day in the lives of teenagers who spend more time in a food court than class.
Chasing Amy (1997) -- Ben Affleck, a comic book writer who bases his work on Jay and Silent Bob, tries to win the affections of a lesbian named Amy in Smith's turn on love and friendship in the '90s.
Dogma (1999) -- Smith and an all-star cast challenge the institution of organized religion in a boldly funny film. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck play fallen angels, Chris Rock a 13th apostle, George Carlin a cardinal and Alanis Morissette a deity.
