Street party to pay off in essay prizes
By JORGE SANCHEZ
© St. Petersburg Times, CRYSTAL RIVER -- The Hot August Nights street party is expected to raise about $10,000 this weekend, and the money will be used as prize money for an essay contest for Crystal River High seniors. Hot August Nights, scheduled for tonight and Saturday at the Crystal Square Shopping Center on U.S. 19 S, Crystal River, will have entertainment by two bands, food, a classic car show, an antiques auction and many other activities. "The great part of this is that the event is already paid for, because we've gotten tremendous support from the community," said Brendalee Combrink, an event organizer who is responsible for the essay contest. "So all the money we raise can go directly into the scholarship fund." The essay contest is open to any senior in this year's graduating class at Crystal River High. The prize money will be split among four essay winners. The theme is "Independence -- What does it mean to you and how is our future predicated upon history?" Combrink said the theme came to her after hearing President Bush's commencement address at Yale University in May and then touring historic Boston. "His words that day were so inspiring, and then seeing all the places in Boston where our history was made also inspired me," Combrink said. "But the students can address any form of independence, whether it's their own personal independence or that of the nation's." The essay should be about 2,500 words. The deadline is Nov. 26.
