    Internet class will focus on hurricanes

    CLEARWATER -- Using the Internet to track hurricanes will be the topic of a special St. Petersburg Times Internet class from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Clearwater campus of St. Petersburg College, 2465 Drew Street.

    With meteorologist Dick Fletcher of WTSP-Ch. 10 making a guest appearance, the class will focus on some of the best Web sites for monitoring storms, particularly hurricanes. Features to be shown will include examples of satellite shots, animated hurricane maps, video reports on hurricane activities, pager and e-mail alerts, infrared images, lightning detectors, official discussions by meteorologists about storms and hurricanes, flood bulletins, evacuation maps, tide charts and live cameras throughout Florida. The class is designed for Internet users of all skill levels. Attendees do not need to bring a computer but are encouraged to bring a pen and paper to take notes about the Web sites they like. The class is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

    Learn boating safety at seminars next month

    Area boaters have several opportunities next month to brush up on their boating skills. A boating safety and seamanship program will begin Sept. 5 at the Dunedin Harbormaster's office at 151 Main St. The cost of the program is $35, which includes educational materials. Additional family participants are given a discount. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Dunedin Flotilla 11-10. Call 595-2415. On Sept. 8 and 9, the Coast Guard Auxiliary Clearwater Flotilla will conduct a boating safety program at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center on Sand Key, 1001 Gulf Blvd. It will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. Materials are included in the $20 fee. Two longer programs, on basic power boating and basic coastal navigation, will begin at the sailing center Sept. 10 and end Oct. 11. They are from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost is $33 for power boating and $40 for coastal navigation. For information on any of the Clearwater Flotilla's programs, call (727) 734-2029. And finally, safe boating courses are being offered by the Clearwater Sail and Power Squadron at 1000 Cleveland St. Courses, which cost $30 each, start Sept. 10, 12, 17 and 19. Classes meet from 7 to 9 p.m. To register and for information, call (727) 441-8775 or (727) 392-1431. Students receive a boating educational identification certificate from the state.
