ST. PETERSBURG -- In a preseason game Thursday, in an evenly matched battle of miscues and good play, Dixie Hollins defeated visiting Jesuit Tigers 12-10.

The first half belonged to the varsity teams to work out kinks, and the junior varsities played in the second.

Jesuit began the first quarter with a drive to Dixie's 8-yard line before three penalties pushed them back 25 yards. Garrett Rivas kicked a 33-yard field goal for a 3-0 Tigers lead.

After the kickoff return there came a flurry of fumbles and possession alternated three times. Jesuit's Aaron Fryer had a 7-yard carry and followed it with a 27-yard touchdown run with 1:38 left in the first quarter. Rivas' kick brought the Tiger lead to 10.

The Rebels retaliated with an 85-yard pass from Bakail Hall to Kevin Marion. The conversion attempt failed, ending the first quarter 10-6.

The Rebels played solid defense in the second quarter, beginning with an interception by Ed James and ending with tough stand as the Tigers moved into Rebel territory behind the running of Fryer and tailback Shane Robinson.

Rebel defensive lineman Curtis Chance stopped one drive with a quarterback sack and powerful hit on the fullback behind the line of scrimmage. The Rebels got another fruitless possession but finished the quarter with a good defensive series.

Rivas came up short for the Tigers on a 51-yard field goal attempt, ending the first half with Jesuit ahead 10-6.

Chris Roman broke outside and scored on a 46-yard run in the third quarter, pushing Dixie to a 12-10 lead and ending the scoring.
