The pitchers

Tanyon Sturtze

The Rays are 7-2 the last nine times Sturtze (8-9, 4.61) has started. A win tonight would be his fourth straight, tying a team record. He pitched seven innings and allowed one run on four hits against Minnesota on Aug. 17.

Mark Buehrle

A winner in his past four decisions, Buehrle (11-6, 2.96) pitched a complete-game one-hitter in his last start against the Rays. He struck out three and walked none in a 4-0 win for Chicago.

On second thought

Asked before the game whether he would stand up or crouch to catch the ceremonial first pitch, Rays manager Hal McRae said he'd opt to stand. But when time came, McRae squatted like a catcher and caught Cal Ripken's strike on the inside corner.
