'Light classical' dinner concert set
By JOY DAVIS-PLATT © St. Petersburg Times, published August 25, 2000 WEEKI WACHEE -- On Sunday, the Hernando County Fine Arts Council will hold Classical Elegance at Twilight, a dinner concert to benefit the building fund for the proposed Nimmagadda Cultural Center. The event, to be held at GlenLakes Country Club, features a special appearance by a brass quintet, Five Star Brass, whose program includes both classical selections and popular favorites. Trumpet player Mark Fenderson said the program can best be described as "light classical." A teacher at the University of Tampa and a performer at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Fenderson said the popularity of groups like the Canadian Brass has greatly benefited quintets like Five Star Brass. "This music has become more accessible to people," he said. "That is wonderful for us." The group's growing popularity motivated event organizer Vince Vanni to bring the Tampa-based group to Hernando County. "These gentlemen do have that kind of reputation," said Vanni, marketing and public relations consultant for the center project. "We are very pleased to have them." Seats for Classical Elegance sold out nearly two weeks before the event, Vanni said, so he encourages people to order tickets early for upcoming fundraisers. The Fine Arts Council will present an expanded version of the annual variety show Oy Vay Cabaret on Oct. 7, starring Carla Becker with appearances by Dee Etta Rowe and Jimmy Ferraro from the Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson. On Oct. 20-22, the nostalgic comedy Cheaper by the Dozen will feature Ken Murrin and young actors from Hernando County. Both events will be held at the Hernando High School Performing Arts Center, 700 Bell Ave., Brooksville. For tickets and information, call 688-5808. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
