Cougar star verbally commits to Tulane

Countryside's Brandon Rottmayer went to football camp at Penn State, Georgia Tech and Miami this summer.

One weekend visit to Tulane, however, convinced him it was the school for him.

Rottmayer returned from New Orleans on Sunday enamored with the Tulane campus, coaches and players. Wednesday night, he called head coach Chris Scelfo and verbally committed.

"The coaches are all likable, and the players are all likable," Rottmayer said. "I felt so comfortable."

While Rottmayer was being recruited by Penn State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Syracuse and Kansas State and was considering those schools, none had offered a scholarship yet.

Wednesday morning, Rottmayer's mother, Lauri, told him that Penn State already had received 11 verbal commitments. Not wanting to get lost in the shuffle, Rottmayer, who has a 3.5 grade point average and scored 970 on the SAT, decided to seize the offer from Tulane.

"I just wanted to get it over with so I can enjoy my senior year," Rottmayer said.

Rottmayer is rated the No. 39 tight end in the nation by Rivals100.com. But he will play on the defensive line for the Green Wave.

Verbal commitments are non-binding. Players can sign letters of intent the first week in February.
