UM: Looking ahead

CORAL GABLES -- The new decade cannot begin soon enough for Butch Davis. The University of Miami coach looks ahead to a field full of scholarship players who walk with the confident swagger of UM's past.

The Hurricanes are ranked as high as No. 5 and are favored to win the Big East and contend for a national title. Shouldn't they always?

"That's the ideal scenario," said Davis, 48, who begins his sixth season as head coach. He was a five-year defensive assistant at Miami under Jimmy Johnson in the 1980s. "You build a program, but you don't build for just one year. If you're trying to do it right, you're trying to build consistency, continuity for the long term. And you don't cut corners."

There probably are some who wish Davis had done so. The Miami faithful had become accustomed to winning, not rebuilding. A 5-6 season in 1997 was the low point, UM's first losing season since 1979.

"We could have averted a losing season in 1997," Davis said. "We didn't have to have a losing season that year. But it would have meant signing 12 or 15 junior college players for the sake of that one season and not having the Santana Mosses and those kind of guys in the program down the line.

"That's the way we're trying to build the program, with good solid recruiting classes year in and year out, building for depth. Hopefully this will become like it was in the '80s and early '90s. A tradition. That's it's not big news. That this is the norm."
