Rays win as LaForest nears cycle

ST. PETERSBURG -- Pete LaForest came within a single of hitting for the cycle and had three RBI as the Devil Rays won 7-4 Friday over Vero Beach.

The Rays tied the score in the fifth on a double by Jorge Cantu and a triple by LaForest. Cantu singled in the tying run, and the go-ahead run scored on a throwing error.

Eddie Kofler earned the win and Jason Pruett the save.

DUNEDIN 12, CHARLOTTE 7: Dunedin had 16 hits. Two Blue Jays had four RBI each, catcher Josh Phelps went 3-for-5 and shortstop Jersen Perez went 3-for-4. Winning pitcher Chris Baker allowed two earned runs on four hits for the host Blue Jays.

CLEARWATER 4, JUPITER 3: The Phillies scored two in the eighth to squeak by the visiting Hammerheads. Phillies centerfielder Skip Kiil was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Cary Hiles pitched the last 11/3 innings for his eighth win.
