Kansas St. wins in sloppy fashion

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- This was not the way Kansas State wanted to start its bid for a national championship.

Ragged on offense and spotty on special teams, the No. 8 Wildcats did not wrap up a 27-7 victory over underdog Iowa on Saturday until a lucky interception turned into Jonathan Beasley's touchdown with 5:03 left in the Eddie Robinson Classic.

"I don't think we were ready. That's poor coaching. It's my fault," Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. "Our execution wasn't very good."

Beasley's 8-yard run turned a shaky 17-7 lead into a more comfortable 24-7 advantage. Then Jamie Rheem's second field goal with 1:38 to go provided a deceptively respectable final score.

"We didn't come down here to be a scout team. That wasn't our goal at all," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said.

More than 60,000 Wildcats fans who crammed into Arrowhead Stadium despite temperatures nearing 100 degrees held their breath when star running back/kick returner David Allen went out in the second half with an apparent ankle injury.

"I think he's going to be all right," Snyder said. "I'm not sure yet. The X-rays indicated there was no fracture."

LA. TECH 63, MISS. VALLEY ST. 10: Brian Stallworth threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns for the host Delta Devils.

TEXAS TECH 24, NEW MEXICO 3: Kliff Kingsbury threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns and the host Red Raiders won in pass-happy coach Mike Leach's first game as coach.

Utah player okay after being shot at wedding

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah's Ben Allison was recovering after being shot in the chest at a family wedding. Allison was being treated for a wound on the right side of his chest at LDS Hospital, where he had been upgraded from serious to fair condition, hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said.

"This is not a life threatening injury and he is expected to recover," Gomez said.

The early Saturday morning shooting occurred during a family wedding in West Jordan, Utah.

Police said the shooting might be gang-related, and it appears Allison and another man shot in the leg were innocent bystanders.

Lt. Julie Stringer said several shots were fired at about 12:30 a.m. in a crowded parking lot outside of the National Guard Armory, where the wedding had taken place.

Police have identified a number of suspects, but have made no arrests. Witnesses at the scene told authorities that members from rival local gangs were in the parking lot, Stringer said.

OBIT: Cal Stoll, the former Minnesota coach who had a heart transplant 13 years ago, died at 76 after a long illness.
