© St. Petersburg Times, Assistant principal decisionCRYSTAL RIVER -- Superintendent David Hickey said Monday he will recommend that Edith Speight become the new assistant principal at Crystal River Primary School. The recommendation will come before the School Board at today's special meeting. Speight, 53, worked at Crystal River Primary School for 20 years, serving in a variety of jobs ranging from classroom teacher to media specialist to curriculum specialist. She also served as technology teacher, and her most recent assignment was working as the central region technology specialist. Speight will replace Sandra Kennedy, who was recently named the school's principal. Boating fatality brings arrestJASPER, Tenn. -- A Homosassa man has been arrested after authorities said he was on board a stolen houseboat that collided with a bass boat, killing one man. Thomas Charles Hughes, 36, is charged with public intoxication and could face further charges, said Dan Hicks of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Authorities said Hughes was on the houseboat that collided Friday night with a bass boat occupied by Peter Shetters and Roy Durham, knocking both into Nickajack Lake. Durham was rescued, but Shetters was not. Shetters' body was found Saturday. Hughes was being held at the Marion County Jail. Jasper is 100 miles south of Nashville. -- Associated Press Fundraiser scheduled at Fort De Soto ParkA 2.6-mile walk to raise funds to combat polycystic kidney disease will take place Saturday, Sept. 8, at Fort De Soto Park in Pinellas County. With PKD, a disease that has no cure, cysts grow on the kidney, eventually choking kidney function. The fundraiser is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway in Tierra Verde. There is no registration fee. Walkers from around the state will come with their lists of sponsors, and perhaps their own donation, and walk to raise money for a PKD cure. Lois Frankel, a Democrat running for governor, is scheduled to speak at a free "Salute to Labor" picnic at noon Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8189 on Veterans Drive off U.S. 19. Frankel is minority leader in the Florida House of Representatives. The picnic's sponsors are the Citrus County Democratic Executive Committee and some local unions. For information, or to arrange a ride to the picnic, call Joe Cino at 628-7191. 28 seek appointment to circuit judgeshipOCALA -- Twenty-eight lawyers are seeking appointment as the next circuit judge in the 5th Judicial Circuit, which comprises Citrus, Hernando, Marion, Lake and Sumter counties. Circuit judges have jurisdiction in all five counties and, if the judge is challenged at the polls, voters throughout the circuit vote in the contest. Circuit judges serve six-year terms. The Legislature earlier this year created the position, which will be based in Marion. The applicants are: Glenn Abbott, Thomas L. Boll, Mark P. Brewer, Lewis P. Carey Jr., Patricia Doherty, Darlene Dunn, Lucille Espey-Francis, S. Ray Gill, Larry D. Houston, Eugene H. Big Sisters program has mentors availableCRYSTAL RIVER -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Citrus County has announced that it has female mentors available to mentor girls ages 7 to 18, but no girls have sought such services.
