Ga. Tech undecided about makeup game BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech, ESPN and the Black Coaches Association tentatively agreed Monday to Dec. 1 as a makeup date for the BCA Classic. But Georgia Tech hasn't decided whether it wants to play the game.

Severe thunderstorms forced game and school officials to cancel Sunday night's game at Lane Stadium just as the teams were lined up for the opening kickoff.

Rick Giles, president of the organization that produces the game for the coaches' group, said officials released the tentative date after being inundated with questions about a makeup game.

If the schools do not play, the financial loss in ticket receipts and revenues from sponsorships could amount to more than $2-million, Giles said.

Mike Stamus, sports information director at Georgia Tech, said the school hasn't decided whether to make up the game after playing rival Georgia on Nov. 25. It wasn't immediately clear if the Yellow Jackets were legally obligated to meet Virginia Tech.

Georgia Tech athletic director Dave Braine said Sunday night that he wasn't inclined to schedule a makeup game.

"Our reasons for playing a preseason game were because we had an inexperienced quarterback," he said. "He will have 11 games by then."

ARKANSAS: Coach Houston Nutt says the Razorbacks should know about the status of defensive end Randy Garner before they open the SEC season on Sept. 23. The school also hopes to find out by then whether self-imposed penalties will avoid a full-fledged NCAA investigation. The school suspended Garner because he accepted $100 for a few hours work in December.

BYU: Quarterback Bret Engemann remains day-to-day after spraining his left knee against FSU.

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE: Running back Alan Taylor was diagnosed with a fractured left fibula and is expected to be out 8-10 weeks and maybe all of the season.

COLORADO: Defensive end Tyler Brayton was suspended indefinitely after a fight with another player during practice Sunday. Brayton scuffled with tight end Jesse Wallace, who sustained a mild concussion and a cut to the head.

GEORGIA: Receiver Michael Greer was suspended for the first five games for violating unspecified team rules.

KANSAS STATE: Kick returner David Allen will miss Saturday's game against Louisiana Tech and could miss others because of an ankle injury.

PITT: Coach Walt Harris said he still hasn't decided between senior John Turman and junior David Priestley as his starting quarterback.

AP POLL: Penn State lost more than the Kickoff Classic over the weekend. The Nittany Lions are out of the Top 25 for the first time since the end of the 1992 season. Soundly beaten by USC 29-5, Penn State saw its streak of being ranked in 119 consecutive polls end with the release of the first regular-season ratings. Nebraska and FSU remained 1-2.
