TAMPA -- The agent for John Lynch hopes to reach an agreement on a contract extension by the end of the week that will enable the two-time Pro Bowl safety to possibly finish his career in Tampa Bay.

"John has been with the Bucs since his rookie year and he's delighted to be there and loves the organization and the players and coaches," agent Leigh Steinberg said. "Everything is getting more and more exciting and he would love to stay there. The good old days are right now."

Lynch, an eighth-year veteran in the final year of his contract, could become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Lynch has imposed a deadline of the start of the 2000 regular season for negotiating a contract extension or he plans to wait until the end of the year. Steinberg said talks are ongoing.

"Whatever term we agree on, I think John could fulfill," Steinberg said. "He feels great and he still has an intense desire to play."
