Monday (Labor Day): Holiday for students and teachers.

Classnotes

Centennial Elementary: After School Band Program starts, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10.

Sanders Memorial Elementary: Open House will be held on Tuesday for the following classrooms: 6 to 6:30 p.m.: Intermediate Chameleon and students of Mrs. May, Mrs. Hamman, Mr. O'Keefe and Mr. Kulikauskas. 6:30 to 7 p.m.: Primary Chameleon and students of Mrs. Sanders. 7 to 7:30 p.m.: Intermediate Gemini and students of Ms. Davis and Mrs. Kinsman. 7:30 to 8 p.m.: Primary Gemini. Art, music and physical education teachers as well as a media specialist will also be on hand.

Cox Elementary: Open house, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Kindergarten workshop, 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12. Parents of kindergarten students are encouraged to attend this workshop to learn how to help their children with reading and math lessons at home.

Lacoochee Elementary: Volunteers are needed for tutoring and assisting emerging readers in the America Reads program. For information, call Bonnie Bick or Wayne Miles at (352) 524-5600. Open house will be Sept. 20.

Lake Myrtle Elementary: Open house; for primary classes 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, intermediate classes, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Land O'Lakes High: Open house, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

San Antonio Elementary: Open house, Sept. 11, 6 p.m. for primary students and 7 p.m. for intermediate students. Scholastic Book Fair runs Sept. 10-14.

R.B. Stewart Middle: School Advisory Council meets at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 12.

Wesley Chapel High: The Media Center will be open extended hours -- 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. -- on the second and fourth Mondays of each month beginning Sept. 9. Media specialists will be available on those evenings to assist students.

Kids' Stuff Preschool is hosting a raffle fundraiser to help with medical expenses for Taylor Johnson, a prekindergarten graduate who since October 1999 has undergone aggressive and experimental treatments for neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. Five-year-old Taylor, who in March was featured in an article in Top of the Class, recently found out that her cancer has returned. One- and two-night stays at three hotels on Clearwater Beach are the items being raffled. Cost is $5 per ticket, or five tickets for $20. Tickets can be purchased from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. through Thursday at Kids' Stuff Preschool, 21360 Lake Floyd Drive, Lutz. All proceeds will be deposited in the "Taylor Johnson Trust Fund" at South Trust Bank. For information, call Jackie Genovese at (813) 949-2237.

The Second Annual Pasco Education Foundation Golf Classic will start at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 22 at Plantation Palms Golf Club in Land O'Lakes. Proceeds benefit programs of the foundation, including classroom grants, scholarships and student academic contests. Cost to play is $100 per person and includes golf cart, range balls and various contests. Corporate sponsorships ($400) and hole sponsorships ($100) are available. A silent auction will be held. Taped auditions are being accepted through Sept. 29, for the Tampa Bay Symphony 15th Annual Young Artist Competition. Instrumentalists in middle school through age 21, including pianists, are eligible. The winner will receive a cash award and perform with the Tampa Bay Symphony at three concerts in April 2002. Applications may be obtained at Pasco County school music departments. LIBRARY NOTES

Elementary, middle and high school students, as well as the general public, are welcome to pick up registration forms and guidelines for the Poetry Speaks! 2001 poetry contest at any Pasco County Library branch. Winners of each category will receive a U.S. Savings Bond. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 10.

John D'Antonio, a teacher at R.B. Stewart Middle School, has been selected as Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year. D'Antonio, who also received this award in 1998, was presented with $500 to use for his classroom.
