Gators, Rams to face off in early duel
By STEVE LEE © St. Petersburg Times, published August 31, 2000 LAND O'LAKES -- Coach Kris Keppel wants his Land O'Lakes boys team to beat defending state champion Ridgewood in the worst way and he is counting on a home-course advantage to do just that. The field for Saturday's Gator Invitational at Crews Lake Park also includes Central, Gulf, Mitchell, Pasco, River Ridge, South Sumter, Tampa Bay Tech, Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills, but the fiercest rivalry is the duel between the Gators and Rams. "We've been biting at the bit," said Keppel, who feels this year's Land O'Lakes team "should be comparable to Ridgewood." Ridgewood has won 10 straight Sunshine Athletic Conference meets with Land O'Lakes as runner-up for the past three. Reversing that trend will depend largely on how Land O'Lakes' Scott Habershaw fares against Ridgewood's Mike Vitale. Former Land O'Lakes runner Lee Stephens said Habershaw would have to have his best day while Vitale would have to have an off-day for that to happen. Vitale, a senior, was the best runner in Pasco County last season and has a personal-best of 15 minutes, 14 seconds in the three-miler. Habershaw, also a senior, has a 16:07 for a best time. The girls start on Saturday at 8 a.m. and the boys begin at 8:35 a.m. The junior varsity boys and girls race at 9:10 a.m. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
