CLEARWATER -- For the first time in its 21 years, the Clearwater Jazz Holiday will charge for some tickets.

The festival, Oct. 18-21 in Coachman Park, plans to sell tickets to a 500-seat preferred section for $15 and $25. Free seating on the grass will continue.

"As a non-profit organization, we're always looking for ways to generate money," said Karen Vann, the event's executive director.

Plus, "for many years now we have had quite a few visitors to the Jazz Holiday ask us about how they can get a reserved seat near the stage," event chairman Wayne Garcia said in a news release.

The preferred seating will be behind the VIP area, which is closest to the stage. Traditionally, the section has been reserved for sponsors who held passes.

From 12,000 to 15,000 still will get free seating. Performances will be shown on two large screens on each side of the stage.

Tickets go on sale Saturday through Ticketmaster outlets. Cost is $15 for the Oct. 18-19 shows and $25 for the Oct. 20-21 shows.
