WHAT'S NEW

FORGET THE OLD MAN JOKES: For the past three years, folks used to mention Chris Weinke's somewhat advanced age endlessly. He was 28 as a senior. Even Bobby Bowden joked about Weinke carrying an AARP card. Well, age again is an issue. FSU's projected starter Chris Rix, a redshirt freshman, is all of 20 and hasn't played a down in college.

CAN YOU BEAR ANOTHER MILESTONE?: If FSU wins nine games, Bowden will pass his idol, Paul "Bear" Bryant, in Division I-A career coaching wins. Bowden enters the year with 315. Bryant tops the list with 323. Penn State's Joe Paterno needs two W's to break the record. Pop Warner is third 319. "That has never been a goal of mine, the Bear Bryant thing," Bowden said. "But it's happening. Joe is an inspiration to me in the fact that he keeps going at his age and he don't look any older to me than he always did. That's inspiring. He's not the only guy enjoying his granddaddy years coaching."

GET YOUR PROGRAMS: Even diehard Seminole fans might need to plunk down the money for a program. Gone are 14 starters and 23 lettermen. FSU hasn't lost as many starters since 1997 when 15 had to be replaced.

CALLING THEM OUT: With Mark Richt taking over at Georgia, FSU promoted Jeff Bowden to offensive coordinator. Bowden realizes he, like Richt before him and Brad Scott before him, will receive most of the blame and little credit from the fans. "We went to three national championships in a row and half the people still don't like Mark, and I think he did a great job," Jeff Bowden said. "He couldn't win. I think it's going to be the same way with me. There's going to be some that like what we do and some that don't like what we do." And the ones that like it will praise Papa Bowden. Oh well.

MR. X: Bobby Bowden has his problems with some names, so he's taking no chances on mispronouncing freshman placekicker Xavier Beitia's name. He has taken to calling the former Jesuit standout simply, X. Hey coach, in case you want to get adventurous, it's Sah-vee-ed Bay-thee-ah.

NUMBER GAME: As a freshman, linebacker Michael Boulware wore No. 57. But this season, he has taken No. 58, which his older brother Peter, an All-America defensive end and linebacker with the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, wore while at FSU. "I wore No. 1 (in high school); that's the number I wanted here, but I wasn't able to get it," he said. "So I figured 58 would be pretty good. Keep it in the family and the state." Last year, All-America defensive end Jamal Reynolds, also from South Carolina, had 58.

A DIFFERENT APPROACH: FSU took a new direction with its all-important strength and conditioning program when it hired Jon Jost to replace Dave Van Halenger, who spent 18 years at FSU before joining Richt at Georgia. Jost began his career at Nebraska. He has designed a program that emphasizes leg strength.

IN MEMORY: The Seminoles will wear patches with the No. 53 on their left sleeve for teammate Devaughn Darling, who collapsed and died after an offseason workout on Feb. 26. Darling, expected to contend for a starting linebacker job, was 18. The football team's media guide is also dedicated to Darling's memory.
