Tarpon Springs at Gibbs

LAST MEETING: Tarpon Springs 30, Gibbs 15 (2000)

THE SKINNY: A year ago, the Spongers' win clinched the 3A-7 title. They are in different classes now, but the matchup is no less intriguing. Prolific passer Ron Mathis returns for Gibbs while Tarpon turns to newcomer Anthony Houllis.

Clearwater at Largo

LAST MEETING: Largo 7, Clearwater 6 (2000)

THE SKINNY: The roles were reversed last year as 7-3 Largo made the playoffs for the first time in five years and 5-5 Clearwater missed out for the first time in six. A blocked extra point made the difference last year.

Seminole at Lakewood

LAST MEETING: Seminole 19, Lakewood 6 (1998)

THE SKINNY: A tough draw for the Warhawks, looking to extend a 16-game regular-season win streak. Turnovers, rarely a problem last year, hampered Seminole last week in a 6-0 loss to Pinellas Park.

Northeast at East Lake

LAST MEETING: Northeast 20, East Lake 0 (1994)

THE SKINNY: The Vikings lost their opener a year ago, ending a 43-game regular-season win streak and beginning a throwaway 3-7 season. Getting off to a better start will not be easy against the Eagles. Page: East Lake Putnam: Northeast Schwarb: East Lake

Pinellas Park at Dixie Hollins

LAST MEETING: Dixie Hollins 19, Pinellas Park 3 (1994)

THE SKINNY: The Rebels missed the playoffs last year with three of its four losses by a touchdown or less. Tonight, Dixie looks to the air after gaining all of 341 yards passing a year ago. Pinellas Park will apply pressure with a massive line.

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney at CCC

LAST MEETING: CCC 30, Cardinal Mooney 7 (2000)

THE SKINNY: How prolific was CCC last year? The 30-point effort against the Cougars was its third-lowest during the regular season. Running back Mike Scanlon leads a new Marauders ground-based offense. Page: CCC Putnam: CCC Schwarb: CCC

Boca Ciega at Countryside

LAST MEETING: Countryside 29, Boca Ciega 21 (1998)

THE SKINNY: The Cougars were pummeled up front by CCC last week in a 45-28 preseason loss. Boca Ciega's small offensive line -- with one returning starter -- is not likely to duplicate the feat. Page: Countryside Putnam: Countryside Schwarb: Countryside

Dunedin at Osceola

LAST MEETING: Dunedin 34, Osceola 29 (2000)

THE SKINNY: A year ago, the Falcons moved to 2-0 with the win over the Warriors but finished 3-7. Osceola again will put its fate in the hands of running back Jason Teague.

PHU at St. Petersburg

LAST MEETING: None

THE SKINNY: Both are coming off 3-7 seasons and start new QBs (D.J. Webb for PHU, Alex Powell for St. Petersburg). Give a slight edge to St. Petersburg, playing at home for new coach Todd St. Louis, a proven rebuilder.

Santa Fe Catholic at Northside Christian

LAST MEETING: Santa Fe Catholic 26, Northside Chr. 6 (2000)

THE SKINNY: The Mustangs simply lacked offensive gallop while going 2-8 last year, scoring 72 points all season. Three returning running backs and a new quarterback will try to boost production. The Crimson Hawks also finished 2-8 last year.

Trinity Prep at IRC

LAST MEETING: IRC 16, Trinity Prep 14 (1997)

THE SKINNY: With its third coach in three years, IRC hopes it has found some consistency in Chris Ahleong. But building on last season's two wins will have to wait a week. The Saints went 8-2 last year in 2A.

Fort Meade at Keswick

LAST MEETING: Fort Meade 46, Keswick 6 (2000)

THE SKINNY: Uh-oh. When the Miners play Pinellas teams, things get ugly. Keswick knows. IRC (57-0 losers last season) knows. Northside (69-0) and Shorecrest (52-0) know. The Crusaders have promise. It just will not show here.

Admiral Farragut at Riverhills Christian

LAST MEETING: Admiral Farragut 63, Riverhills 0 (2000)

THE SKINNY: The Blue Jackets will be an intriguing team to watch, coming off of an 11-0 season to enter a district schedule and chase a first playoff berth. AFA's three top running backs graduated, however, and coach Mike Jalazo might open up the offense to compensate.

SPC at St. Joseph

LAST MEETING: None

THE SKINNY: The Barons had a miserable summer, seeing their postseason hopes dashed by the FHSAA due to recruiting violations. Look for some frustrations to be taken out in St. Augustine against the Class A Flashes, who went 2-8 last season.

Shorecrest at Fort Myers Evangelical Christian

LAST MEETING: None

THE SKINNY: Last season, the Chargers got back on track, returning to the playoffs following a one-year absence. Now, the key is to parlay that into a winning season, a good possibility considering only four seniors graduated. Evangelical finished 5-5 last year.
