REMEMBER DARVA AND RICK: No one learned a lasting lesson from Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?

REMEMBER DARVA AND RICK: No one learned a lasting lesson from Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?

Fox is developing a reality show in which four urban women go to Alaska to find a husband among a group of men who want a wife. It has ordered seven one-hour episodes of the series, tentatively titled I Want a Wife: Alaska.

The general concept: The women select prospective mates from a pool of about 40 men, to be presented eight an episode. The men are put through competitions designed to prove their virility, among other attributes. Fortunately, no details are available on this.

After dating and getting to know one man each, the women decide at the end of each episode whether to "save" any of the men or eliminate them. But before that moment is reached, any man can propose to his woman.

Fox is looking for men and women in and out of Alaska. It's thinking about putting the show on at midseason.

BENJAMIN WHO?: The National Enquirer started it, and the tabloids have taken it and run with it: Julia Roberts is shacking up with a married cameraman, Danny Moder, and his wife, Vera, has no problem talking to the press about it. One quote attributed to Vera: "I don't have the whole story. Julia has the whole story. Why don't you call Julia and ask her what she did?" Julia isn't talking.

FOR THOSE NOT OPTING OUT: Anyone with a practical view of fashion knows black is never out. But in the world of designers, fads and Glamour do's and don'ts, sometimes it officially is and sometimes it isn't. This fall it's in. So wear black without fear of being a social outcast.

GOING DOWN IN FLAMES: "In one category, I'm up against Cirque du Soleil. You know, I've never been on fire. I can't compete with that." -- Ellen DeGeneres, to the Dallas Morning News, on one of her two Emmy nominations, for outstanding variety, music or comedy special, for the HBO special The Beginning.
