Blake 44, Alonso 0

TAMPA -- Alonso was routed in the first game in the school's history, but Blake coach Clarence Higdon had sympathy for Raven counterpart John Fontes.

"I've been where they are and it's tough," said Higdon, who started Blake's football program five years ago and lost 79-0 to Jefferson in the Yellow Jackets' inaugural contest. "I just want to encourage (Fontes) that things will get better."

On Friday, Blake's Carl Gallon caught two early touchdown passes from Jamal Huff, and the Jackets proceeded to extend their lead to 31-0 by halftime.

Blake played much of second string in the second half, but it still wasn't until the fourth quarter before Alonso made its first-ever first down.

"We're looking for improvement and we need to keep looking ahead," Fontes said. "We need to learn to walk before can run. ... It might take two years to be able to compete."
