Wild half

If you went strictly by second-half performance, the wild-card standings might look different. While Oakland still would win a playoff berth in the AL hands down, the Cardinals, not the Cubs, would top the NL wild-card standings. So with less than a month remaining in the regular season, here's what the wild-card standings looked like through Friday based solely on how teams were playing in the second half:

(American League team, since July 12, actual standing)

Athletics,34-13 -- .723,1st

Angels,28-20 -- .583,t-4th

White Sox,27-21 -- .563,t-4th

Red Sox,20-25 -- .444,2nd

Twins,16-32 -- .333,3rd

* * *

(National League team, since July 12, actual standing)

Cardinals,30-18 -- .625,3rd

Giants,28-19 -- .596,2nd

Dodgers,25-22 -- .532,4th

Cubs,24-24 -- .500,1st

Phillies,21-26 -- .447,5th
