Letters to the Editors

Candidates should stress the issues, not personal attacks

© St. Petersburg Times, published September 3, 2000

Editor: I am writing in regards to all the articles written for, about and from candidates for this upcoming election. I am 14, and as a future voter I find it very ridiculous how some adults running for an elected office act like animals. Some candidates could sit for probably an hour just putting down their running mate!

Mostly all you see in newspapers and on TV is how some candidate found out something "bad" about the other, and usually makes the front page! Take for instance these headlines: "Mural spices up commission primary," "Public defender's race gets uglier" and "Political fliers sling accusations."

I mean, come on, I would much rather vote for someone that I know about and isn't acting like a rat.

I would also like to thank all the candidates who are sticking to the issues. And finally, I think that candidates running for any office, whether it is president, mayor, or county commissioner, should worry more about what they have done, and what they will do if they happen to get elected.

Politicians should helpsave shuffleboard club

Editor: As a former member, I am writing on behalf of the senior citizens who are trying to save the New Port Richey Shuffleboard Club from the politicians at City Hall.

For our good health, doctors tell us to exercise. What better way than to shuffle? Yet our Council members at City Hall are trying to take away our good health. Where will the tournaments be played? These players come from miles around to enter the games. Where will they play cards, bingo and have sing-alongs, wonderful pot luck dinners and be in a safe, clean place?

I was a member there for many years, met many wonderful people. With some we have long-lasting friendships and play pinochle. Come on, you politicians, members of the council; this is a fight between you and the seniors. I know you will win, like always. But remember, the seniors don't forget!
