CRYSTAL RIVER -- The art show season officially got under way Saturday, as the Citrus County Crafts Council held its annual Harvest Moon Craft Show at the National Guard Armory.
The armory was packed. Cars soon filled the parking lot and overflowed several blocks down the street as people flocked to see the latest creations of crafters.
Even though it is early September, there were plenty of holiday crafts to choose from, including orange pumpkins cleverly designed from clothes dryer vent pipes to intricate beadwork for Christmas decor.
Modern crafters spend a considerable amount of time on their creations. For example, several of the handcrafted floral arrangements, door wreaths and costume jewelry were the results of many hours of work.
Crafter Eleanor Nally displayed her beadwork, ranging from bracelets to intricate Christmas ornaments gleaming with embedded miniature lights. She has been a member of the Citrus County Crafts Council for four years.
"I work all year to get ready for this show," she said.
Her table drew many visitors, who marveled at her beadwork expertise. She said early Saturday that sales had been good.
The crowd that packed the auditorium came early and stayed until closing, buying personalized items, which many said would give their home a unique flair.
"Besides, here you can shop and not have to spend a lot of money for something that's really unusual and beautiful," said Bob Patterson, admiring a candle display which uses a nonflammable crystal solution to float a burning candle seemingly in midair.
